In the heart of the village of Sougné-Remouchamps, a stone’s throw from the famous côte de la Redoute, the Maison du Cyclisme Liège-Bastogne-Liège is paying tribute to Eddy Merckx on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The ‘Simply Eddy’ exhibition will run from 21 June to 21 September 2025.
Eddy Merckx, the greatest champion in the history of cycling, won 525 victories.
“What else can we write about him besides the rave reviews, what else can we learn about him, what else can we realise about Eddy Merckx that others haven’t? What if we “simply” paid tribute to him, to celebrate his 80th birthday, as did the whole of Belgium and many other international players”
A cycling legend honoured

Why 2025 marks a turning point
Eddy Merckx turned 80 on 17 June 2025. His birthday was widely celebrated, both in Belgium and abroad. This symbolic moment paid tribute to an extraordinary list of achievements: 525 victories, including 5 Tours de France, 5 Giri, 1 Vuelta, and numerous classics. Among them, the legendary Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which he won 5 times.
Nicknamed ‘the Cannibal’, Eddy Merckx went beyond the boundaries of sport. His influence lives on. Events and exhibitions still regularly pay tribute to him.
Even today, he still inspires modern riders. Many are trying to revive his attacking spirit and the ambition of the one-hour record he set in 1972.
That’s why the Maison du Cyclisme Liège-Bastogne-Liège has decided to devote an exhibition to him. It celebrates this sacred monster of Belgian cycling in a place that resembles him.
