Simon Hupperetz: a man from Malmedy committed to cycling in Rwanda

Originally from Ligneuville, in the municipality of Malmedy, Simon Hupperetz contributed to the development of cycling in Rwanda for almost ten years. The Maison du Cyclisme Liège-Bastogne-Liège celebrates his journey in the “AfricAntilles Vélo Passion” exhibition through an interview and several items he has contributed.

Almost ten years dedicated to Rwandan cycling

Throughout his involvement, Simon Hupperetz accompanied Rwandan riders to the World Championships and the Olympic Games. He also helped develop the Tour du Rwanda and worked alongside others to organise the 2025 Road World Championships in Kigali: a historic first for the African continent.

His interview offers an insight into this adventure and his experiences working with Rwandan cyclists.

Jerseys and memorabilia to discover in the exhibition

To enrich “AfricAntilles Vélo Passion”, Simon contributed Rwandan national team jerseys, as well as jerseys from other African countries, including Benin and Somalia.

Visitors can also discover a jersey from the Rwandan Epic, a mountain bike race, and memorabilia from his participation in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as Rwanda’s national coach.

Discover Simon Hupperetz’s interview and these pieces of African cycling history at the Maison du Cyclisme until the end of 2026.

Thank you to Simon for sharing his story and contributing to our exhibition!
