Victory of a Belgian on stage 12 in 1974 and 5th Tour de France victory for the “Cannibal”.
We’re already on stage 12 of the Tour de France! 50 years ago, on stage 12, victory went to Eddy MERCKX’s team-mate Joseph SPRUYT.
SPRUYT, a pro rider from 1965 to 1976, won 2 other stages in the Tour, one in 1969 and the other in 1970, and wore the yellow jersey for a day in 1967. Joseph has 8 Tour de France, 4 Tour of Italy and 4 Tour of Spain to his name! His record of achievements includes a number of places of honour, including the title of Belgian vice-champion in 1971.
50 years ago, Eddy Merckx also won his 5th and last Tour de France. He has no fewer than 8 stage wins to his name!
For the 1974 Tour, his team in the Molteni Alimentari colours was made up of Belgians Joseph BRUYERE, Ludo DELCROIX, Jos DE SCHOENMAECKER, Joseph HUYSMANS, Edouard JANSSENS, Marc LIEVENS, Frans MINTJENS, Joseph SPRUYT and Victor VAN SCHIL.
Maison du Cyclisme Liège Bastogne Liège is honouring these exceptional champions! Eddy Merckx and Joseph Bruyère are being honoured with rare collector’s items. Their emblematic orange bikes, jerseys and almost complete brown and dark blue equipment are testimony to their legend.
Yellow takes centre stage!
You can also discover other Tour de France yellow jerseys. From different eras, from Thévenet to Hinault, via Merckx and Demi Vollering for the ladies, not forgetting Philippe Gilbert!
But perhaps you prefer the special red polka-dot jersey for the best climber? No problem! We have that in shop, along with Laurent JALABERT’s collection, including a bike specially customised for him by his sponsor at the time, Look. The green and white jerseys of other champions are also on display.
Planning a summer visit to the Maison du Cyclisme? We’ll be waiting for you! We’re open every day of the week! Check our opening times and drop in for a visit.
